Melwa Conglomerate hosted its annual gathering, “The Night of the Generals,” on 27 February at Cinnamon Life, Colombo, bringing together leading professionals from across Sri Lanka’s construction, engineering, financial, and industrial sectors.  The event served as a strategic platform for industry leaders to engage in meaningful dialogue on the future of urban development and infrastructure. A highlight of the evening was a thought-provoking Talk Show on “Smart and Resilient Cities,” featuring internationally renowned experts George Kunihiro and Naveed Anwar. Their participation added significant global perspective to the discussion, drawing on decades of experience in architecture, urban planning, and advanced engineering systems.

George Kunihiro highlighted the rapid pace of global urbanisation, noting that nearly 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, placing increasing pressure on infrastructure and resources. Naveed Anwar emphasised the importance of integrating technology with resilient engineering practices to support sustainable urban growth. The event attracted a diverse audience of senior professionals, reflecting the interconnected nature of modern development where collaboration between industries is essential for long-term national progress. The gathering provided a valuable opportunity for networking, knowledge exchange, and aligning perspectives on Sri Lanka’s evolving urban landscape. For Melwa Conglomerate, the event underscores its long-standing contribution to the country’s industrial and construction sectors. Established in 2002 as a steel manufacturer, the group has grown into a diversified industrial powerhouse with interests spanning construction materials, hospitality, pharmaceuticals, tea exports, and global trade. Its portfolio includes subsidiaries such as Melwire Rolling, Melgyp Industries, and Sands Active, supported by a workforce of over 2,500 employees. As Sri Lanka continues to advance its infrastructure ambitions, Melwa’s “Night of the Generals” stands as a testament to the importance of collaboration, innovation, and strategic foresight in shaping resilient and sustainable cities for the future.
