Kings Hospital Colombo has introduced the SSI Mantra 3.0 robotic surgical system, strengthening its capacity to deliver advanced, minimally invasive procedures and expanding local access to precision-led surgical care.
The addition marks a significant step in the hospital’s efforts to align its clinical capabilities with international surgical standards. By integrating robotic-assisted technology into its operating theatres, Kings Hospital Colombo aims to support surgeons in performing complex procedures with greater precision, control and visibility.
The system provides stereoscopic 3D 4K visualization and advanced instrument control, enabling surgeons to work through smaller incisions. This robotic surgical system is capable of supporting a comprehensive range of surgical procedures, including cardiac surgery. Depending on the procedure and the patient’s condition, minimally invasive surgery may help reduce blood loss and infection risk while supporting shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.
Beyond its immediate surgical applications, the investment is intended to reduce the need for Sri Lankan patients to travel overseas for selected advanced procedures. It also forms part of the hospital’s longer-term focus on developing local clinical expertise and training future generations of surgeons in robotic-assisted techniques.
The SSI Mantra 3.0 system also provides a foundation for future tele-surgery capabilities, subject to the completion of the necessary regulatory, clinical, and technical requirements. This could enable the future development of surgical procedures in which the surgeon and patient are located in geographically separate locations.
