“SLIM Partners with IDB to Fuel MSME Development through Gamata Marketing”
The national body for marketing in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM), continues to champion the growth of micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) through strategic initiatives that promote entrepreneurship and sustainable development. In line with this vision, SLIM partnered with the Industrial Development Board (IDB) of the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development to launch the ‘Gamata Marketing’ workshops in the Kurunegala District. The first workshop under this initiative took place on 11th June. This collaboration was designed to equip MSMEs with essential marketing and business skills, fostering stronger, more resilient enterprises that contribute to Sri Lanka’s economic progress.
The Gamata Marketing program reflects on SLIM’s ongoing efforts to empower SMEs beyond urban settings by delivering practical knowledge directly to rural and regional entrepreneurs. Through these workshops, SLIM provides access to marketing expertise via seasoned professionals, ensuring that participants gain valuable insights which they could immediately apply within their businesses. The initiative not only supports enterprise development but also strengthens the brand presence of SLIM and IDB within local communities.
A key focus of the Gamata Marketing workshops was to address the specific challenges faced by small businesses in today’s fast-evolving marketplace. From understanding consumer behavior and enhancing brand identity to leveraging digital platforms for growth, the sessions were tailored to deliver both theoretical knowledge and practical tools. Participants actively engaged, shared experiences, and explored innovative solutions to drive their business success.
The workshop conducted in Kurunegala drew enthusiastic participation from MSMEs across the district. The interactive sessions, led by experienced SLIM resource persons, covered a range of topics designed to help entrepreneurs strengthen their marketing strategies, improve customer engagement, and identify new market opportunities. Feedback from participants highlighted the value of such initiatives in bridging the knowledge gap for small businesses striving to remain competitive and resilient.
Commenting on the initiative, Prof. Dewasiri N. Jayantha, President of SLIM, noted, “Through initiatives like ‘Gamata Marketing’, SLIM remains steadfast in its mission to uplift the SME sector across Sri Lanka. We firmly believe that empowering entrepreneurs with the right marketing skills and knowledge is key to fostering sustainable economic growth, especially in rural areas. Our collaboration with IDB allows us to extend meaningful support to entrepreneurs and contribute to the creation of vibrant, successful businesses throughout the country.”
Dr. Dilhan Sampath Jayatilleke, Vice President – Education & Research at SLIM, emphasized the importance of continuous learning in business development, and said, “At SLIM, education forms the cornerstone of our work. The ‘Gamata Marketing’ workshops were specifically designed to close the knowledge gap for small businesses by providing them with practical tools to navigate today’s competitive marketplace. It was heartening to witness the enthusiasm and active participation of SMEs in Kurunegala — a reflection of their dedication to learning and growth.”
Highlighting the broader impact of the initiative, Mr. Enoch Perera, Vice President – Events & Sustainability at SLIM, stated, “This workshop series formed an integral part of SLIM’s long-term sustainability agenda, focused on fostering inclusive economic growth throughout the island. By bringing these programs to every district, we ensured that no entrepreneur was left behind. The success of the Kurunegala sessions was a testament to the positive change that happens when expert knowledge reaches the grassroots.”
In addition to the immediate benefits of knowledge-sharing, the workshops also served as a platform to introduce SMEs to further growth opportunities through strategic partnerships and networks. Mr. Gayan Perera, President of the ASBF Sri Lanka Chapter, encouraged SMEs to actively engage with supportive organizations, “I strongly encourage SMEs to join ASBF and tap into the wealth of opportunities we provide; from knowledge-sharing forums like ‘Gamata Marketing’ to regional networking, market access, and ongoing business development assistance. The ASBF membership is a powerful step towards resilience, innovation, and long-term success in today’s dynamic business environment.”
From the perspective of program leadership, Dr. Muditha Hewawanithunga, Project Chairperson of ‘Gamata Marketing’ at SLIM, shared, “Through ‘Gamata Marketing’, we create meaningful pathways for small entrepreneurs to build their businesses with confidence and purpose. This initiative is about empowering local communities with the knowledge and tools they need for sustainable advancement, and the positive response so far has been deeply encouraging.”
Adding insight from the workshop delivery, Mr. Asanka Udayakumara, SLIM Executive Committee Member and Resource Person, reflected by saying, “It was truly rewarding to engage with such a motivated group of entrepreneurs in Kurunegala. The workshops provided a vital opportunity for SMEs to gain practical marketing insights, understand their customers better, and develop strategies that drive real impact. I believe that continuous learning is essential for business success, and I commend all participants for taking this significant step.”
Finally, Mr. Chamil Wickremasinghe, Chief Executive Officer of SLIM, reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurs at every level.
